The Hero name + how to create a strong brand

We were so excited to see so many of you tune into our first blog post - The Hero Start Story and we are thrilled to be back this week for round two!

Following on from our first post we thought it only natural to share a little more about the building blocks of our brand and the intriguing story behind our name ‘Hero’.

 “Someone who would put their life on the line just to help someone else, with no ulterior motive”.

GREEK MYTHOLOGY


Here at Hero HQ we love to explore all derivatives of ‘Hero’ including the Greek love story of Hero & Leander. Greek mythologist Anna Claybourne elaborates on her site, about exactly what Hero means within this ancient love tale . . .

“The name Hero originated as a female character in one of Greek mythology’s most tragic love stories. Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite (the goddess of love, desire and beauty) who fell in love with Leander, a young man who was located on the eastern shores of the strait. Leander would swim across the strait every night to meet her, guided by a lamp that Hero would light at the top of the tower. This went on for a whole summer. However, one night when the weather was bad, the light was blown by the wind and the winds made Leander's task very difficult. He eventually got lost and drowned in the sea. When Hero saw his body washed ashore, she fell off her tower to meet him in the afterlife”.

 SO WHY HERO, FOR US?


When Laura was pregnant with her first child, the name Hero was a possible baby name. Unfortunately, Laura’s husband JT wasn’t in favour at the time (shame!).

Fast forward a few years to when Laura was considering brand names for her new foray and the elusive “Hero” popped back into contention! It just seemed to fit with the ethos and nature of business. A shop for strong, style conscious women who wanted to elevate their everyday lifestyle.

“I’d read about Hero in Greek mythology and knew the empowering connotations of strength, determination and reliability the name held but was also taken with how feminine and elegant the name was".

  A FINAL NOTE...

ARE YOU THINKING OF STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR BRAND NAME

 

Starting a business can be extremely daunting, whilst simultaneously exciting. The scare factor is all part of the courage involved in making a dream, a reality.

A strong brand name is imperative in today’s business environment where competition is thriving.

The first encounter consumers make with a business is likely to be their brand name. Those initial key messages, thoughts and qualities that a brand communicates are crucial. These should clearly channel exactly what the brand represents.

Laura's tips when coming up with your brand name...


1.  Write EVERYTHING down. Come up with silly names, bad names and write them all down. You need to go through a process, it'll rarely be the first name you thought of so let it evolve.

2. What does it look like? Strange I know but the shape of the word can make a big difference. Will it be capitals or lower case? How does look on social platforms (and are the handles and domain available?). I knew with the Hero brand it had to be lower case to take away from the masculine connotations. However, you will notice that when we discuss Hero as a brand, we prominently use a capital 'H'.

3. Think about the lifestyle surrounding your brand name that you want your customers to buy into and stick to it. The strength of your brand will depend on EVERYTHING you create around it. Your social media, the experience you give your customers it all counts.  So does your brand name fit with the lifestyle?

4. Spelling. It sounds simple but you will be writing it down, telling others and typing it a million times so it needs to be easy to spell. Can people say it?! The less ambiguity the better.

5. Think about your 'story'. You'll be asked about it - ALOT. Create a name and a brand that has meaning to you.

    I’m jumping ship and leaving my job as a teacher in order to pursue my dream to open a shop! I’m nervous and excited and completely overwhelmed by the task ahead of me although Hero is a great inspiration to me which is somewhat reassuring.

    I have come up with a name for my business that I really like, Tinker Tailor and I’d be interested to know what others think of it. I’m hoping to sell small gifts, accessories such as scarves, bags and jewellery and some homeware items. The name is based on the novel Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, I like the way Tinker Tailor rolls off the tongue, I like the connotations of the glamour of espionage and the link to the sharpness and elegance of tailoring; as for the Tinker part I hope it denotes inventiveness, uniqueness and implies that perhaps some of the products in my shop will be somewhat special finds. So there it is, over to you… thank you!
